CIEE São Paulo Hosts Northeastern University Business Students

This July, 10 students from Northeastern University arrived in São Paulo to learn how to do business in emerging markets as part of the Doing Business in Brazil course at the top business school in Brazil, Fundação Getúlio Vargas.

As part of their time in São Paulo, the students were treated to a true Brazilian cultural experience with the help of resident staff from the CIEE Study Center. Students were introduced to all the economic capital of Brazil has to offer during a city tour, trips to local museums and historical sites, and explorations of local neighborhoods. Some of the highlights: savoring traditional Brazilian flavors at a few of the more than 12,000 restaurants that dot the cityscape, exploring the Mercado Municipal, or city central market, built in 1933, and taking in a Corinthians soccer game at Pacaembu Stadium.

Read more about the students’ experience in Sao Paulo.

Study in Brazil with CIEE

There’s no better way for your students to experience true Brazilian culture than by attending a CIEE study abroad program in Brazil!

Students can choose from 14 programs—ranging from business to communications to environmental studies—in three very different, but equally captivating cities:

NEW Rio de Janeiro

Your students can experience Rio de Janeiro as it gets ready to shine on the world stage during the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. From exploring Environmental and Sustainability Studies in the world’s largest urban park to studying Business, Economics, and Culture in one of the world’s largest and most influential economies, Rio offers students a world of opportunity.

At the first U.S. study center in Rio, students will:

  • Choose from an extensive list of courses offered in both Portuguese and English at the perennially top-rated private university in Brazil, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro
  • Give back to the community by volunteering to teach English to adults and children in a nearby favela in Copacabana, joining in on clean-up days, and organizing local events
  • Go on fascinating excursions to places like the colonial city of Ouro Preto, the stage of Brazil’s independence movement
  • Participate in exciting cultural activities around the city, such as samba lessons, hikes in the world’s largest forest, or a percussion lesson in a favela to name a few

 São Paulo

With CIEE in São Paulo students have the chance to delve in depth into Brazilian history and culture while furthering their major requirements in one of the world’s largest and most dynamic metropolises. Whether they choose to study Business and Culture in this economic capital of Latin America or explore Liberal Arts in one of Brazil’s cultural capitals, students will live and learn in the center of it all.

In Brazil’s largest city, your students will:

  • Take courses at Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo da Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV-EAESP), considered to be one of the best business schools in Latin America, or the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP), one of the top-ranked universities in Brazil
  • See what business in Latin America is really like through visits to important local, national, and international companies like Natura, Brazil’s biggest manufacturer of beauty products
  • Get to know the diverse people and landscapes that make up Brazil by visiting places such as the city of Paraty, a preserved Portuguese colonial and Brazilian Imperial town
  • Make a difference in the lives of those in the host community by helping to build houses inside a local favela or teach English to firemen, soldiers, and other workers

Salvador da Bahia

Stunning historic and ethnic diversity, a strong African influence, and easygoing beach culture are on display in the coastal city of Salvador da Bahia. With CIEE’s Liberal Arts program, students get out into the community to investigate the region’s vibrant Afro-Brazilian culture, the juxtaposition of historical architecture next to modern complexes, and the city’s storied history as the first capital of Brazil.

While in Brazil’s “capital of happiness,” students will:

  • Take courses at the Universidade Católica do Salvador, one of the highest ranked private universities in the Northeast of Brazil
  • Participate in cultural activities designed to immerse students fully in the local culture, including capoeira lessons and a visit to the museum of Afro-Brazilian history
  • Join local residents as they volunteer at a group home for children with HIV/AIDS or help out during percussion and dance classes at a local NGO
  • See a different version of life in the vast country that is Brazil during a three-day excursion to Rio de Janeiro
