Mumbai, India: International Business and Culture--General Updates

Orientation

Starting in the fall term 2011 (July), CIEE staff will be adding a Sunday morning bicycle tour of the Colaba area of Mumbai and a rickshaw orientation of the Bandra suburb, famous for its historic churches, multitude of restaurants, cafes, and  shopping areas.

Program Director’s Site Visit to the Welingkar Institute

In January 2011, Dan Olds, Program Director, visited Welingkar to visit classes and meet with some local students. Dan was extremely impressed as he listened to group presentations on how students would reorganize the India Post from a loss leader into a profitable enterprise for the Indian government. Dan also spent time learning from students in the InnoWe Center for Design and Entrepreneurship where students receive faculty guidance and stewardship on how to present their ideas to companies and investors to launch their own company or product. Having visited and worked with many institutions in Asia and having studied management in Singapore, Dan believes Mumbai and Welingkar to offer the most robust learning environment for business students in Asia given the explosion of global companies, highly articulate and entrepreneurial student body, and time-tested delivery of quality management education.

 Housing Information Update

Students are placed in student hostels near the Welingkar facility. Male students live in the “Boys Hostel” which is three bus stops away from the Welingkar campus and takes about 15 minutes to reach by public bus, less by taxi or rickshaw. Female students live in the “Girls Hostel” which is a 5-minute walk from the campus.

The hostels have 24-hour security and an 11:30 p.m. curfew for all students. Students may come in after curfew by alerting the guard on duty about their plans. Each floor has a bathroom that includes western toilets, showers, and sinks. There is a small cooking space on each floor.

To ensure good nutrition and general health among students, Dinner will be provided by the famous “dabbawala delivery service” associated with modern life in Mumbai and cultural artifact from Mumbai’s colonial past. The meals are served in convenient, tray packed; disposable containers which are delivered to the hostels where students may enjoy them at their leisure. Students can choose between vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals. These meals are delivered at 7pm from Monday thru Saturday.
