Visit a CIEE Site This Fall

As a valued partner in international education, we invite you to gain first-hand knowledge about our on-site facilities, to meet with resident staff, faculty, and students, and learn of the culture and local environment in which our programs operate. We are offering several group site visits and open houses this fall.

Through a Site Visit You Will Learn About:

  • Academic programs offered, including program structure and content, host institution and CIEE Study Center facilities and faculty
  • Physical location and attributes of the CIEE Study Center, host institution, and student housing
  • Health, safety, and security procedures
  • Student housing and meal options
  • Overall experiences of students currently participating in the site program(s) including academics, program excursions, co-curricular activities, and daily life
  • Roles and responsibilities of onsite CIEE resident staff and faculty

Denmark, Copenhagen

Karin_mollerKarin Klitgaard Møller, Director, Global Institute – Copenhagen
Karin comes to CIEE with more than 20 years of experience in international education - 15 years at the University of Copenhagen, and the past five years as the Manager of Student Advising and International Relations at EDU, an international study abroad agency. Karin has been a European Association of International Education (EAIE) trainer since 2006, delivering courses on intercultural communication and advising, and is currently member of the EAIE General Council. Karin holds a master’s degree in English and Minority Studies, and a bachelor’s degree in English, both from the University of Copenhagen. Karin reports to Cary Nathenson.

Hungary, Budapest

Elizabeth_simonElizabeth Simon, Director at CIEE Budapest - Retiring
After 25 years of service, Elizabeth Simon, Director at CIEE Budapest, will be retiring this summer. Elizabeth came to CIEE in 1992, and has held several different positions during her long tenure, including the oversight of the CIEE Budapest site for many years.  In addition to working with Study Abroad programs, Elizabeth has also very successfully managed the Hungarian-American Enterprise Scholarship Fund for 14 years. Elizabeth’s last day is July 1. The Director position for CIEE Budapest is currently advertised with the goal of hiring the new Director by this summer.

Netherlands, Amsterdam

Renee_spruitRenée Spruit, Director of CIEE Amsterdam - Departing CIEE
Renée Spruit, Director of CIEE Amsterdam, will be leaving CIEE this summer. Over the last 10 years, Renée has been an integral part in managing the growth of the Amsterdam site.  Renée has held several roles over the years, and, during the last few years, as site Director, she has very effectively managed a super qualified team, and the delivery of many different types of programs. Renée has now decided to pursue other opportunities outside of CIEE and her last day will be August 14. 

Jonathan_keyJonathan Key, Director CIEE Amsterdam
Jonathan Key, currently Academic Manager at CIEE Amsterdam, will be taking on the Director position as of August 15.  Jonathan has been with CIEE for five years, starting out as the Resident Coordinator in Groningen, Netherlands, and eventually moving to Amsterdam where he held different positions, providing support on student housing and student services, and more recently, overseeing the site academics. In addition to his administrative duties, Jonathan currently teaches Screen Cultures and Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Popular Culture.  He received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in American Studies from the University of Groningen and is fluent in Flemish, Dutch and English. In light of Jonathan’s new position, the Academic Manager role will be reviewed and further updates about staffing will be forthcoming.

Poland, Warsaw

Gosia_nowickaMałgorzata “Gosia” Nowicka, Assistant Director at CIEE Warsaw 
After 10 years of service to CIEE, Assistant Director, Małgorzata “Gosia” Nowicka, will be going on maternity leave and relocating to Berlin. Over the years, Gosia has backstopped the study abroad program in Warsaw, acting as a key liaison with students, while performing administrative responsibilities. Her last day will be June 30.  In her place, Aleksandra “Ola” Szkudłapska will be assuming the role of Program Assistant to the Director as of July 1. Ola comes with a background in linguistics and has worked with a number of key institutions, including the Polish Parliament and has been involved in a number of Polish indie music initiatives.

Spain, Alicante

RocioRocío Diez, Director, CIEE Alicante
Rocío Díez, formerly Student Life Coordinator at CIEE Alicante, has been appointed as the new CIEE Alicante Director.  Rocío, had kindly accepted to step up as Interim CIEE Alicante Director, following Paco’s move to Seville in early March, while we conducted the search for a permanent Director.  The search process, in which both internal and external candidates were considered, has now been completed, and Rocio has been selected to hold the Director position. 

 Rocio has done an amazing job leading CIEE Alicante during the past two months.  Prior to that, she was Student Life Coordinator for 3 years, a role that she combined with teaching “Three Cultures in Spain: Jews, Christians, and Muslims”, an elective course.  We are confident that Rocio will do a fantastic job, leading the CIEE Alicante team and going the extra mile to serve our partners and participants.  Rocío brings to her new position extensive professional experience in the fields of communication and cultural management.  She holds a B.A. in Ancient History from the Universidad de Alicante, and an M.A in Ancient History and Archaeology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. 

Spain, Seville

Francisco-diezFrancisco (Paco) Diez, Director, CIEE Seville
Francisco (Paco) Diez has assumed the role of Director, CIEE Seville. For the past 11 years, he has served as the CIEE Alicante Director, where, in addition to managing the site, he taught CIEE courses in inter-disciplinary fields such as Hispanic Studies and Intercultural Communication. He has also taught at the College of Arts and Letters at Michigan State University, and at the Department of Innovation and Teaching Methods (School of Education), Universidad de Alicante. Paco holds a B.A in English Studies from the Universidad de Alicante, and a M.A in Spanish Studies and Linguistics from Michigan State University. Paco is based in Seville, reporting to Clara Rodes.

Latin America

Argentina, Buenos Aires

Carolina Carolina Alba Merlo, Administrative Manager, Global Institutes - Latin America
Carolina Alba Merlo has been promoted to Administrative Manager for all Latin America Global Institutes starting April 2. Carolina has been with CIEE since 1996 and is currently Director of Student Life in Buenos Aires. In her new role, Carolina will provide operational, communication, marketing, coordination, and administrative support across Global Institute locations in Latin America, including Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and Santiago. Working closely with regional leadership, Carolina will focus on the Open Campus program to ensure a cohesive experience for students moving between Global Institute locations. Carolina has her master’s degree in Cognitive Psychology and Learning Processes from Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO). Carolina is based in Buenos Aires, reporting to Erik Perez.

Andrés comes to CIEE from the Universidad de San Andrés in Buenos Aires where he has been professor and consultant in marketing, strategy, and communications and academic coordinator for the marketing and communications master’s program. Andres holds an MBA from the Ross School of Business at University of Michigan and is fluent in Spanish, English, Italian, and Portuguese. As Director of the Global Institute - Buenos Aires, Andres will be responsible for ensuring the highest level of academic quality and student satisfaction. Andres is based in Buenos Aires, reporting to Erik Perez.

Global Operations


Jarlath McGuckin, Director of Program Development
Jarlath McGuckin has been named Director of Program Development, effective May 14. In this new role, Jarlath joins the Global Operations management team, with responsibility for ensuring that the CIEE program portfolio meets the needs of the member institutions and students we serve. In close collaboration with teams across the organization, Jarlath will manage processes and policies related to program development and quality assurance, in alignment with the CIEE strategic planJarlath is exceptionally qualified for the role, having worked with CIEE for 15 years in numerous roles, both in Portland headquarters and abroad.

His first position, in 2003, was as a Marketing and Institutional Relations Assistant, until he joined the St. Petersburg study center as the Resident Coordinator and then Manager for Student Services. During his time in St. Petersburg, he earned an MA in Russian Studies from the European University, returning to Portland in 2013 to join the Study Enrollment team as the Manager for Operations. Since 2014, he has overseen the Asia, Africa, Australia and Latin America team as a Senior Manager. Jarlath’s CIEE journey actually began much earlier - he is a double alumnus, having studied abroad with CIEE in St. Petersburg and Prague during his junior year at the University of Rochester.

CIEE Passport Caravan Gives Away 5,900th Passport

CIEE’s Passport Caravan has sponsored more than 5,900 passports (5,904 to be exact) for students who have demonstrated financial need or come from a population of students typically not represented in study abroad. We’re more than halfway to fulfilling the pledge we made as part of the Generation Study Abroad Initiative to fund passports for 10,000 students around the country by 2020.

For many students, obtaining a passport is the first step to believing they can truly study abroad. By providing passports free of charge and facilitating the passport application process, Passport Caravan opens the door to opportunities for students who might feel that study abroad is beyond their reach.


What is Passport Caravan?

Passport Caravan is a manifestation of our commitment to diversifying the pool of students that are able to study abroad by breaking down the most common barriers to participation: cost, curriculum, and culture.

When Passport Caravan visits a campus, we arrange for passport agents to be present to process passport applications and we provide free passports for up to 50 students. We don’t want the cost and effort associated with getting a passport to prevent any student who wants to study abroad from accessing that life-changing experience.

How do I get Passport Caravan to visit my school?

Request a Passport Caravan event here. CIEE will work with each institution selected as a Passport Caravan partner to choose a date that works with both the institution’s calendar and the overall calendar of Passport Caravan. When selecting an event date, please consider the lead-time necessary to promote the event and have students gather documents.

Coping with the Rise in Student Mental Health Incidents

Colleges and universities across the country are experiencing a rise in student mental health issues. Sadly, we are beginning to see evidence of this trend in study abroad programs. This observation led CIEE to implement a mental health training program for our onsite staff around the world. ​
In 2015, CIEE implemented new technology that permits real-time incident reporting by our local staff around the world on everything from student hospitalizations to scraped knees. Our incident database currently houses data on recorded major and minor health and safety incidents that have occurred over the past two years.
Analysis of this comprehensive data set has yielded many insights that can be translated into actions that enhance the safety of students abroad. One emerging risk the data revealed is a steady rise in student mental health incidents globally. 

Help Identifying and Supporting “At-Risk” Students

For the pilot program, we partnered with Kognito, a health simulation company, to offer an online mental health training course. Participants interacted with virtual students or avatars to learn how to identify “at-risk” students and how to direct struggling students to further support services.

We recognize that international educators may find these conversations difficult and that staff are typically neither medical doctors nor psychologists. As part of the training, staff were able to practice multiple scenarios and different responses to determine the best methods for speaking with students experiencing or approaching mental health crises.

Pilot Results and Next Steps

The results of the pilot program were extremely promising, with 100 percent of participants reporting in the post-course surveys that the training program made them feel more comfortable identifying and speaking with students in crisis.    

CIEE is now rolling out the program to all student-facing staff globally so they are better equipped to respond quickly and effectively to students with mental health needs.

Comparative Learning Opportunities in 10 International Cities

Forty years of research has proven the value of comparative learning to achieving learning outcomes. Moreover, today, students from all academic backgrounds desire more flexibility and experiential learning opportunities in study abroad programs to help them achieve their academic goals. And college presidents, provosts, and deans are looking for more English-based study abroad programs for students seeking business, health sciences, and STEM degrees. To respond to these trends, we have developed the CIEE Global Quad, a 10-city network of study abroad sites on three continents that function as a matrix of coordinated, comparative, experiential learning opportunities. Students can select and register for hundreds of classes, internships, service learning experiences, and research projects available across this network.
CIEE is pleased to introduce our new registration tool that enables students to explore a nearly infinite set of possible international learning combinations and share those options with their advisors for review and approval. The tool showcases the 6-week content blocks student can select in different international cities — even different countries, or continents — to build a rich, comparative learning experience that keeps them on track for graduation.




Each semester is divided into three 6-week blocks. The new registration tool shows the courses available at each Global Institute location  (Berlin, Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Copenhagen, London, Madrid, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, and Santiago) in each block, and how the courses align with our six academic tracks (Business; Communication, Journalism, and New Media; Global and Community Health; International Relations and Political Science; Language, Literature, and Culture; Sustainability and Environmental Sciences; Internships and Research Projects).

The tool can be used to explore popular study combinations around a theme such as Medicine in the Modern World (with courses in Copenhagen, London, and Cape Town), Old World, New Media (with courses in London, Rome, and Madrid) or Spanish Language Immersion (with courses in Madrid, Buenos Aires, and Santiago).The tool allows you to download course syllabi so you can evaluate which combination of courses best fit the student’s academic plan. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, there is also a chat window that offers the ability to ask questions.

Best of all, once the student has selected their study abroad block combination, the details are passed on to the next step of the application process so there is no need for students to apply for each block or location separately.
