This January, CIEE will host the 2014 Winter Faculty Summit in Santiago, Dominican Republic. During this exciting event, we'll bring together faculty experts—thought leaders and innovators—in the disciplines of public health and nursing, development studies, and education to stimulate ideas for shaping new study abroad programs that serve the diverse interests of today’s faculty and students and to generate best practices for strengthening existing international education programs.
Increasingly, students of all academic majors are demanding more opportunities for service-learning, internships, community engagement, independent research, and field studies. Yet, incorporation of these elements into study abroad programs differs widely, particularly in the disciplines of public health and nursing, development studies, and education.
In the Dominican Republic, we’ll examine this trend and, using the collective wisdom of our participants and lessons learned from incorporated visits to CIEE community program partners, develop bold new ways to enhance the study abroad experience that align more closely with the needs of today’s students and sending institutions.

CIEE developed the Faculty Summits to bring together faculty thought leaders to reflect on the field of international education and to generate ideas for improving services to the institutions that entrust CIEE to deliver programming for their students around the world. As a direct result of the discussions held during the 2012 Summer Faculty Summit, CIEE, in partnership with one of the participants, developed a new Global Architecture and Design program aimed at offering the latest theories, practices, and technology in four distinctive locations.
